The city of Colombo, Sri Lanka’s commercial capital and largest city, is a blend of both historic value and modern vibes. Dating back over 600 years, Colombo was a trading hub for sea merchants and colonial rulers, and one of the first things you will notice on your tour is how diverse the city has become. The wide array of Buddhist and Hindu temples, mosques and churches reflect the various beliefs practiced all over the island and the beautiful facades of the old, colonial buildings contrast with the modern shopping arcades. Your insightful tour takes you past the Gangaramaya Buddhist Temple, the Pettah bazar area, the Wolfendhal Dutch Church, the Old Parliament complex, The Bandaranaike International Memorial Hall, Nelum Pokuna Theatre, Viharamahadevi Park, the Independence Square and the National Museum (entry payable locally). Before heading back to your hotel, perhaps take a stroll along the Galle Face green and enjoy afternoon tea or a sundowner (payable locally) at the iconic Galle Face Hotel, one of the oldest in South Asia, with fantastic views out across the glistening Indian Ocean.

Proceed to Udawalawe. ( Approximate Duration 4 hours).

Included excursion:  Visit to the Elephant Transit Home in Udawalawe.( 1800 Hrs )

Located in Udawalawe, in close vicinity to the famous Udawalawe National Park, the Elephant Transit Home was establlished in 1995 to care for orphaned elephants. These abandoned elephant calves are nurtured and re-habilitated with the ultimate hope of re-introducing them back into the wild, as soon as they are fit enough to fend for themselves. The elephant calves are fed daily with rich nutrient milk formula, making feeding time one of the best times of the day to visit. The elephant calves are allowed to graze freely during daylight hours and are constantly under the surveillance of a team of well-trained veterinarians.

Evening do an included nature walk near the border of the Udawalawe national park for app. 60 minutes.

Udawalawe -Kataragama-Tissamaharama

Conduct an early morning included game drive at Udawalawe National Park, with a packed breakfast.

Morning Included Excursion – Game drive at Udawalawe National Park.

Whilst Yala is famous for its leopards, Udawalawe National Park is a wonderful place to see wild Asian elephants in their natural habitat. An early morning or late evening visit will rarely disappoint. The park is home to approximately five hundred elephants and during your visit you are likely to see herds of around 20-30 individuals. On your game drive, admire the undulating countryside, the open grassland, the teak forest and the Udawalawe reservoir –all fantastic areas to spot elephants. The tall grass species are a unique feature to Udawalawe and provide important food sources for the elephants. Keep your eyes peeled and you may also see sambar deer, water buffalo, jackals and monkeys including the grey langur and the endemic toque macaque. A total of 183 species of birds have been recorded here, some of which are resident and the others, migrant. The endemic Sri Lanka jungle fowl, Brown-capped Babbler, Malabar pied Hornbill and the Sri Lanka Spurfowl are all excellent sightings for birdwatchers. Of the water birds, the rare Osprey and Indian Cormorant are also of note.

Proceed to Tissamaharama. (Approximate Duration 2 hours –Distance - 80 Km).

Check in to Tissamaharama hotel and spend the rest of the day leisure.

In the evening visit the Kataragama Kovil for a Pooja ceremony.

Kataragama Kovil  - Kataragama Temple is one of the most venerated places of pilgrimage in Sri Lanka, sacred to both Buddhists and Hindus. For the former, Kataragama is one of the ‘sixteen great places’ sanctified by the Buddha. A Buddhist image house and the Dagoba (religious memorial), named Kirivehera, are noteworthy places of worship located within the Temple. For the Hindus, it is the abode of God Skanda and it is customary for the devotees to cleanse themselves in the holy waters of the Manik River which flows nearby and offer flowers, incense and fruits to the shrine. The chime of bells and the sweet smell of jasmine, mixed with that of fresh fruits and incense, creates an exotic atmosphere laced with religious fervor

Optional Excursion – Yala National park dame drive.

Optional Excursion – Bundala National park game drive .

This afternoon enjoys Yala National park game drive.

Proceed to the deep south of the island and venture out on a game drive in search of native wildlife through Yala National Park, one of Sri Lanka’s oldest and largest national parks. The park covers an area of 151,778 hectares comprising of five blocks, one of which contains a strict nature reserve. Currently only Block I, covering 14,100 hectares, is open to the public. If you’re lucky, you may be able to spot three of Sri Lanka’s “Big Five” endangered animals on one single safari, since the Sri Lankan leopard, sloth bear and elephant can all be found here. In fact, the park is known to have one of the highest density of leopards in a concentrated area.

We recommend an early morning or late afternoon game drive to elevate your chances of spotting the most animals, although the mini night safaris on the outskirts -which use night-vision infrared lights – are also extremely fun. Whilst searching for the elusive leopard, herds of spotted deer, Mugger crocodiles, wild boar, wild buffaloes, langurs, and peacocks also provide brilliant photograph opportunities. Bird-lovers will particularly enjoy the display of over 200 different species, including large flocks of migratory birds.

Return to the hotel and spend the rest of the day at leisure.
